Titles at Rethink Priorities

What title should I apply for?

Rethink Priorities often hires for research roles where we are relatively neutral to the seniority or experience of the applicants. Because our research is interdisciplinary and relatively unique, we often don’t have specific background requirements for candidates. However, we want to recognize the past accomplishments of candidates. Due to this, we use the following system for titles for new hires on the research team at Rethink Priorities. When you apply for a research role that asks you to select a title, we strongly encourage you to choose which role you are applying for based on these criteria. We will consider any candidate for any role, but we broadly consider more senior roles to require an increased amount of research experience and knowledge.

While we use this system for setting titles for external hires, often staff can move through our system without meeting these criteria — we often value experience at Rethink Priorities more highly than outside experience.

Research Assistant / Associate Researcher

  • Experience: Less than two years of experience doing research similar to that required for the role
  • Typical compensation: $69,000 – $78,000 USD annually for full-time work

Research Analyst / Researcher

  • Experience: 2-4 years research experience, and/or an advanced degree (such as a Masters or PhD) in a field relevant to your research topic. Your graduate experience only counts toward the year requirement if your research was very similar to what you’ll do at Rethink Priorities.
  • Typical compensation: $82,500 – $100,500 USD annually for full-time work

Senior Researcher / Senior Research Manager

  • Experience: 5-9 years conducting relevant research, and you likely also have a terminal degree in your field (such as a PhD) or equivalent additional experience.
  • Typical compensation: $114,000 – $118,000 USD annually for full time work

For non-research roles, we will typically explicitly advertise jobs at particular levels. The salaries for these positions are set on the same scale as outlined above.
